The Melanoma Ecosystem

Visualisation For

a Doctoral Thesis

Ewout asked me to design a cover for his doctoral thesis: Transcriptomic characterization of the melanoma ecosystem before and early during immune checkpoint inhibition. He had a rough idea of the concept and how he wanted to visualise it. This idea was that every melanoma is its own ecosystem and he wanted a person shown in the image. Inspired by a planar approach to a cell and how to depict this as an infographic. I came up with, that the ecosystem starts from a single point and spreads through cords to a cluster. Through these "cords" in different colours, based on the colour clusters they give the cells, I represented the different elements in the cells. At the top, these again have different connections to represent connection with each other.

Front Cover

To give the front cover a clear view of what it's about and to leave enough room for the title. I opted for a side view where the wires are clearly coming out of the person's arm.

Back Cover

Here I had a little more liberty and could do a more abstract up close representation of the melanoma.
